The Producer
A fishmonger and bar owner
It all started with an oyster... you may not know this but Pimm's was orignially developed as a 'tonic' to aid digestion.
In the 19th century, James Pimm, a fishmonger and bar owner, developed a tonic as a digestif for those who ate the oysters he sold. His 'tonic' gained popularity, and demand grew for it to be bottled and sold as its own distinct beverage. Pimm served his drink in a tankard that he called a "No. 1 Cup", and this remains on the bottle's label to this day.
In 1880, The Pimm's company was bought by Horatio Davies, who later became the Lord Mayor of London. Using his societal connections, he made Pimm's the drink of the upper middle classes. So much so, that it started popping up across the Empire as the drink to enjoy when dreaming of a summer's day back in Britain.
It is now widely enjoyed at key summer events across the world, but especially in the UK, including Wimbledon, Chelsea Flower Show and many a university garden party.
The Product
A drink synonymous with summer
Pimm's is a gin-based liquer and 'spirit drink', with a qunine and a secret spice blend giving Pimm's its unqiue flavour.
Traditionally, it is mixed with lemonade with the addition of fruit, such as strawberries, as well as cucumber and mint. This makes a lovely summer punch.
However, there are many variations and recipe ideas, with recommendations of ginger ale, ginger beer, bitter lemon and other citrus fruits, as well as apple also being added.
A full bottle of Pimm's No. 1 can be found in our brand new British Pimm's Picnic Hamper. Nestled in to a gorgeous wicker picnic hamper, complete with cutlery and plates, there are bottles of lemonade, as well as an array of treats to make the perfect summertime gift.
