Introducing Coaltown
"Coffee With Purpose" is the wonderful slogan used by Coaltown, our new Welsh supplier of ground coffee and coffee beans.
Coaltown is based in Ammanford in south west Wales. Traditionally, it was a mining town where coal (also known as Black Gold) was an essential part of life and the economy.
However, as the collieries have now closed, Coaltown have an ambition to bring a new and thriving industry to this part of Wales, which produces a different type of 'black gold'. And they are truly succeeding with this brilliant business, which is paying above the Real Living Wage to all of its employees.
Minimizing environmental impact and promoting a sustainable future
In 2019, Coaltown became the first B-Corp certified specialty coffee roaster in the UK. This is really to be congratulated given the supply chains necessary. They take their responsibility to the environment, as well as society, very seriously right through: "from the experts who produce our coffee at our roastery to the baristas who brew it."
Coaltown have worked hard to build direct trade relationships with their coffee growers, even in the most remote locations (where they find the best produce), and seek to secure only the most advantageous procurement route for the life and sustainability of all projects, growers and suppliers.
They are also committed to reducing any direct impact on the environment. Their coffee bags are fully compostable and they donate waste coffee chaff and grounds to local gardening groups for composting. The roastery itself runs on zero carbon electricity and even their uniforms are made from 100% organic cotton.
